Exhibition May 2024
29th April - 27th May 2024 9.30 – 4pm
St George’s Hall, Bewdley, Worcestershire, DY12 2EQ

All about the human form

During May we shall be exploring the human figure; life drawing and collage, portrait painting, groups of figures and composition, adding figures to artworks, and even figure sculpting!

Remember that Hilary will also be giving two Life Classes in St. George’s Hall, Bewdley, in conjunction with the Foundry Artists Exhibition during May 2024.

Life drawing and collage

In these workshops we shall explore creating images of the nude figure using collage and mixed media. We shall also look at how Matisse created his famous cut out nudes, using the break between shapes as lines to depict form.

Wed 1st May 6.30 – 9pm

Thursday 2nd May 10.30am – 3pm

Friday 3rd May 10.30am – 3pm

Portraiture

Satin, silk, fur, linen, lace—drapery gives artists an excuse to prove their virtuosity at rendering light, surface, and volume.  The costumes and fabric of the subjects in paintings also shows their power and wealth. We shall use patterns of fabric to explore the nature of a portrait and learn how to use clothing on a figure to give expression and movement.

Wed 8th May – Life Class, St George’s Hall, Bewdley 6.30-9pm

Thursday 9th May 10.30am – 3pm

Friday 10th May 10.30am – 3pm

Stealing from the Old Masters

The old masters knew how to depict figures as portraits and in groups.  We shall steal their knowledge by learning about their compositions and use of tone and colour to create our own ‘copies’. This will even include painting on gold leaf. Will be enlightening and much fun – don’t miss this one!

Wed 15th May 6.30-9pm

Thursday 16th May 10.30am – 3pm

Friday 17th May 10.30am – 3pm

Putting figures into artworks

A landscape with a path pulls us to follow the path.  Add a figure and the viewer of the painting may connect with the person and start imagining a story. Many of us are reluctant to add figures to our work – it’s tricky to get right and believable in loose landscapes or seascapes. I these workshops you will learn how to depict figures near and far in confident and exciting ways!

Wed 22nd May – Life Class in St Georges Hall, Bewdley 6.30-9pm

Thursday 23rd May 10.30am – 3pm

Friday 24thMay 10.30am – 3pm

Over to you and 3D figures

These workshops are for you to choose and create your own artwork based on the figure using techniques that you have learnt during this month– it can be a painting, drawing, lino or tetra pac print or even a 3D figure in papier mache. It’s up to you!

Wed 29th May 6.30-9pm

Thursday 30th May 10.30am – 3pm

Friday 31st May 10.30am – 3pm
