Life drawing and collage
In these workshops we shall explore creating images of the nude figure using collage and mixed media. We shall also look at how Matisse created his famous cut out nudes, using the break between shapes as lines to depict form.

Portraiture
Satin, silk, fur, linen, lace—drapery gives artists an excuse to prove their virtuosity at rendering light, surface, and volume. The costumes and fabric of the subjects in paintings also shows their power and wealth. We shall use patterns of fabric to explore the nature of a portrait and learn how to use clothing on a figure to give expression and movement.

Stealing from the Old Masters
The old masters knew how to depict figures as portraits and in groups. We shall steal their knowledge by learning about their compositions and use of tone and colour to create our own ‘copies’. This will even include painting on gold leaf. Will be enlightening and much fun – don’t miss this one!

Putting figures into artworks
A landscape with a path pulls us to follow the path. Add a figure and the viewer of the painting may connect with the person and start imagining a story. Many of us are reluctant to add figures to our work – it’s tricky to get right and believable in loose landscapes or seascapes. I these workshops you will learn how to depict figures near and far in confident and exciting ways!
