Little and large

Artists use scale to create different effects on the viewer, such as emphasizing importance, highlighting detail, and forcing perspectives. The scale of a work and its specific location can be part of the experience too. Artists can also use scale to create the illusion of distance, multiples and repetitions provide pattern and rhythm, and small items can build into bigger artworks and even a diorama.

During the next 4 workshops we shall be exploring the history of miniature painting and will create our own, study and make our own scroll painting in Japanese ink, creating a diorama as did Joseph Cornell C, and the final option of designing and making a mosaic.  Phew!

Remember that you will need to collect small objects for the diorama and bits of pottery if you would like to create a mosaic!

Miniature painting and drawing is something children do naturally and then we expand our visual perception ever wider. In this workshop we shall create our own ‘miniatures’ and study the history of miniatures to help us.

Thursday 13th and Friday 14th February – 10.30am – 3pm

Handscrolls are long, narrow, horizontal works of imagery and calligraphy rendered on paper or silk that often integrate both text and images.  This workshop will explore the film like quality of a scrolled image.

Thursday 20th and Friday 21st February – 10.30am – 3pm

In this workshop, we shall study the work of Joseph Cornell and 3D dioramas and plan and create our own.  You will need small objects, paper bits and pieces and memorabilia that are linked together by a memory – plus a shallow box. An interesting and thought-provoking workshop

Thursday 27th and Friday 28th February – 10.30am – 3pm

This workshop is an opportunity to complete work you have made during the previous workshop or make a mosaic! The mosaic needs to include some of your own pottery items, shells, beads or other items to make a varied patterned surface. A lot of fun!

Thursday 6th and Friday 7th March – 10.30am – 3pm
