Multiples

Artists repeat visual elements to create patterns, rhythm or emphasise a concept.

Islamic art and Op Art often use mathematical multiplications and repeated geometric shapes to create complex visual designs.

Techniques such as printmaking allow artists to create multiple identical or slightly varied copies of an artwork.

We shall focus on multiples over the next four workshops, beginning with the power of repeating patterns and learning about artists who used them. Then, we shall use printmaking to make multiple prints using lino and collagraph. Finally, we shall use a single repeating image, a la Warhol. It’s all very exciting!

Repeated forms have been used in art from ancient times. The act of repeating a unit repeatedly will create new narratives and interpretations, give rhythm and energy  to your work!

Thursday 13th and Friday 14th March – 10.30am – 3pm

Lino printing provides the perfect opportunity to design a range of cut shapes and textures to create a repeating design for your own image, wrapping paper or even wallpaper! Not to be missed.

Thursday 20th and Friday 21th March – 10.30am – 3pm

Printmaking produces multiples in the form of prints and in this workshop, we shall use collagraphy, which is making a plate with collaged materials, and to make multiple textured prints with subtle colouring. Wonderful.

Thursday 27th and Friday 28th March – 10.30am – 3pm

Andy Warhol used multiple screen prints and paintings in unnatural colours to create a barrage of a repeated image. In this workshop you will use the format of a repeated image to create a vibrant piece of work! Alternately you may choose to complete your work from previous workshops.

Thursday 3rd and Friday 4th April – 10.30am – 3pm
