This summer, in these inspiring hands-on workshops, we will explore the relationship between light and colour, learning how colour can create mood, atmosphere, depth and emotion. Through practical exercises and guided demonstrations, you’ll develop confidence in colour mixing, understand harmonious colour schemes, and learn how to observe the subtle shifts of colour found in nature.
Working from observation, memory and imagination, Foundry Artists will experiment with complementary colours, limited palettes, light and shadow, and seasonal colour relationships. Suitable for beginners and experienced artists alike, these workshops will help you see colour in new ways and use it more expressively in your artwork.

Understanding how light changes colour. Create your own colour wheel and explore exciting colour combinations and effects, and see how artists such as Hockney use colour combinations to create vibrant artworks.

Palettes and Complementaries
Mixing colours is tricky in all media. We shall learn how to mix a range of palettes for different effects, referencing the Post Impressionists' use of vibrant complementary colours, particularly Bonnard.

The Zorn Palette
Skin tones and colours are always a challenge. In these workshops we shall use the portraitist Anders Zorn's palette to learn the colours of skin, especially the hands. Many portraits fail because of the portrayal of hands. Now is your chance to make them the star of the show!

This week we shall register the infinite colours in nature through colour mixing and analysis of the range of colours in natural objects and the changing colours of the seasons. Try new materials, mix them up with a focus on the colours alone, then break free with nature's expressive palette.

Colours have always been used to create mood and atmosphere, even to conjure up memories of places and moments. We shall study artists Peter Doig and Howard Hodgkin and their use of vivid colour to evoke emotion and narrative of the present and the past.

Lino, Tetrapak and Collagraph
Printmaking is usually confined to the monotones of black and white. Now you can explode into printed colour using lino and tetrapaks, or experiment with colouring black and white prints using watercolour and collagraph. Not to be missed!

Many artists have made expressive jewellery, and now it's your turn! Learn to tie strings of beads, and use and manipulate found objects to construct expressive, modernist, sculptural pieces of jewellery.
